Xander's Birth Story

I have always enjoyed reading the thoughts and experiences of mothers bringing their child into the world so I figured I should share my story for all the crazy people out there like me!

To start off, a back story is needed. From the very first time I met my OB/GYN he told me that I would probably be having my baby between 37 and 38 weeks simply because of my diabetes. He also told me around 32 weeks I would have to start doing 2 non stress tests every week until I give birth and that I would be working with a perinatologist and getting ultrasounds regularly.

Well everything started and went according to plan. I was glad because I didn't have any morning sickness. As I hit 33 weeks I started going to my non stress tests (nst) the very first one I went to Xander wouldn't move much, he had a great heart beat and had some movement but not enough to pass the test. My Dr. told me that he wanted a follow up test done. He said he would try to fit me in at his office, if I couldn't be fit in there he would send me over to the hospital where I had been getting my ultrasounds done, and if they couldn't fit me in there he would have me emitted to the hospital cause then they would have to do the test. After he said that I started to freak out. If the test was no big deal why would he go as far as having me emitted just to get one test done. After all was said and done Xander was just fine and we made it home after being in some kind of Dr office from 11am to 7pm.

After that long first experience of nsts they never were that long but were always longer then the 20 min they were supposed to take. Well around that same time (given it a week or 2) my blood pressure seemed to be a little on the high side. I did a 24 hour urine test and when the results came back I was told I have mild preeclampsia and was told I am on light bed rest.

So a few more weeks go by and my Dr gives me my induction date, June 28th. He said the week of the hospital will call me and let me know what time to come in to get me all started. The week before on Monday I woke up with a pressure headache, which I was told is a sign of the preeclampsia getting worse, so after about 3 hours of it not lightening up I had Preston take me to the hospital. They ran a nst on me, did some blood work and said you look to be doing fine, do another 24 hour urine test and we will see where to go from there tomorrow.  I went back the next day and all tests came back normal.

Friday came along and I went for my second nst for the week. Well at that one they checked the liquid around Xander. In previous weeks it was up between 15 and 18 (normal or healthy is 10-20) that day it had dropped to 5. Below 5 is considered to be in the danger zone so he wasn't there yet but he wasn't far off. The Dr that was there for the nst said if things don't start looking better I most likely wouldn't be going home that night. After a few hours of tests the nurse came in and said you are being released you are fine to go home. I was so confused because he had dropped so much and the nurse had given no information about it. So Preston and I went to my Dr's office and requested to talk to a nurse or Dr or someone who could explain what had just happened. The Dr on call was the one who had the answers for us. (My Dr. was on vacation) He said that I was on the boarder line of dangerous on a few things but nothing bad enough to take Xander that day. He said they did one additional test just to check where he was at and since he passed it they weren't going to push for anything. He gave Preston and I a choice though. (which was comforting) He said with all of these test on the boarder like they are we can take the baby as early as tomorrow morning or you can wait until your Dr gets back on Monday. He went over what inducing would entail at that point and what a c-section would entail at that point. We told him we would talk it over between the 2 of us and would let him know what we decide.

As Preston and I sat in the office talking about what this would look like for us either way we decided we couldn't come to a conclusion there at the Dr. office and that we needed to go home and pray about it. After our prayer we knew, even though I would only be 36 weeks and 5 days along, that we were supposed to do a c-section the next day. We called the office and they scheduled us for 6:15am the next morning and told me not to eat anything after 10 that night.

Preston and I got on our phones right after and told all of our parents what was going to happen and that Xander would be here soon. I also got on the phone and asked if Preston and I could go down to my grandparents house for a blessing before the big day. Needless to say Preston and I didn't sleep much that night!

The next morning when we showed up at the hospital, they took us to our room and told me to change into a gown. As I am changing a nurse comes in and says, we are going to have to send you home for about 3 hours. We have too many mothers here and not enough nurses to keep up. I came out and said, uh I have my own nurse coming to help out. The nurse looked at me in shock. I told her my aunt Diane told me should would be there and that she was on her way. The nurse said let me go call her and I will be back. Well shortly after Diane walked into my room and said it would be a bad idea to send a fasting diabetic home when she can't eat so I won't be going anywhere. She ended up staying for the day. What a great aunt!

A little while later my mom shows up to keep Preston and I company while we sit nervously waiting for our turn, and of course to take pictures of the whole experience. While we waited the anesthesiologist walked in and Diane said this is Ryan he is going to be your best friend. Diane was awesome at keeping us updated with how long we had to wait, how many people were ahead of us, who everyone was when they walked into the room and what to expect next. When she walked in with her hat and gown on I knew it was time. She gave Preston his outfit, put a hat on me and said you are going to walk into the Operating room, and in there we will numb you up and get started, follow Ryan. I got up to my feet, leaving Preston to wait until he was led back and my mom to wait until it was all over to see her again.

My mom had told me when they do the spinal block be sure not to jump at all. This is the spine they are working with, if you jump you never know what could happen. Well as I am sitting on the table, hunched over waiting for the small pinch of the local numbing before the spinal block was placed all I could think is "sit still, don't jump, sit still, don't jump". Sure enough when that small pinch came... I jumped. Ryan promised he wouldn't tell my mom that I jumped as long as on the next one, the spinal block, I didn't jump. Good thing I didn't jump on that one! They told me to stay there while the medicine went into effect, that and I think they wanted to make sure gravity helped out a little and make it go down my spine not up. It felt like when he pulled the needle out of my back blood came with it and was running down my back. I was assured that nothing was coming out of my back and that is a good sign that the medicine was working.

After they helped me lay down it felt like I was falling out of my own body. I couldn't hear very tell and I was getting tunnel vision. I asked if that was supposed to happen. They said it isn't supposed to happen but it can. Ryan said to give him a few minuets and I would be feeling good again. They said the medicine can lower blood pressure and that was all that was happening. As I started to feeling better I heard the familiar voice of Preston and asked if that was really him. It was so I asked him to come hold my hand.

Once Preston sat down by my head they started scrubbing my belly, making it a sterile field, then up went the blue curtain. I laid there wondering what was happening to my body on the other side of that blue curtain. Wondering with every touch that I felt if it was really a scalpel cutting open my skin. Never really knowing what each touch really was. The best way I have found to describe what it felt like is it felt like I was getting a belly massage. It had been hurting for so long and had been being stretched for so long that they finally decided I needed a massage and that is what they decided to do for me. I am pretty sure I had a goofy smile on my face through the entire procedure. I was just so happy that the day had finally come that I get to see my sons face and hold him in my arms instead of my belly. They seemed to have been working for some time with different parts of my belly. Then it felt like the Dr's assistant jumped up and sat right on me. Then I heard "there is his head", up stood Preston to get a look at our young child. Seeing the light spark in his eyes made me want nothing else besides seeing that same view he had just seen. Shortly after the light slightly faded from his eyes and he said I think I'm going to sit back down now.

Later I found out his head was bigger then normal so on the way out he was stuck with half of his head inside and the other half outside. With the pressure of being stuck there he ended up with a nice black eye. Also at a later time I learned that he had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck 3 times. He was blue when he came out. No one seemed panicked, Preston didn't know that wasn't normal so I never even knew. Preston walked over to see Xander as they were cleaning him up and doing measurements. Still the only thing I could think of is getting a peak at that little bundle of joy and hopefully getting my arms around him as well. Much to my disappointment as I laid on the table unable to move much do anything useful. I hear another Dr say he needs oxygen. We have to take him down to the nursery now, sorry mom you don't get to hold him yet. Diane said can we at least show her his face on the way out so she can see him. He agreed and from about 15 feet away I see a little body lifted from a small bed with an oxygen mask hovering above his face. I didn't get a great look at him but I finally did get to see him. He was set back down, mask replaced and swept out of the room with Preston following them out.

I was a little disappointed that I didn't get a better look or even get to touch him but I knew it was for the best for him. Not long after the blue curtain came down and everyone in the OR was talking about how big of a bloody mess was left behind. They told me not to worry, that I was fine. They said they usually have bags on either side of the bed to catch the blood but one of them was off just enough to make a bigger mess then usual. I wasn't sure if they were trying to scare or tease me with the blood or just tell me what was but I was in no pain, I had heard the cry of my first child and I knew he was going to be just fine. So I just listened to what was going on around me. They brought in the bed I would be transferred to and all I could think was I hope they don't plan on me helping move myself over. I don't think I could do much.

When I got back into the room I started in, it was empty. Diane told me she had sent my mom down to be with Preston cause he seemed a little more freaked out about Xander then I was in my current state of mind. Diane informed me I had to stay in that room for an hour because I had just gone through a major surgery and they had to keep an eye on me for that long after.

Again Diane being the AWESOME nurse she was, she stayed with me and let me know where everyone was and how everyone was doing. My mother-in-law came by to see me, since I was doing well I sent her to the second floor to see Preston and Xander. By the time my mom, Scotty, Kaeci, Kerbi, Dakota and Preston made it up to see me again I was on my way down stairs to my more permanent room. We all somehow fit in an elevator and were on our way. On our way to my room we stopped by the nursery so I could get a better look at baby Xander. I wanted to see him so bad I was doing everything I could to sit up and see him. I think Preston thought I was going to rip stitches I was trying to hard to get a good look at him.

I made it to the room with everyone and I was still just itching to get a good look and hold Xander. I asked when I could see him. I was told as soon as I could get to my feet and walk to the nursery I could see him and hold him. Diane walked out of the room and worked her magic again and she came back with another nurse and Xander. I was so excited to not only see him but to hold him as well! Preston picked him up and held him for a moment then handed him to me. I was finally able to see, hold, and snuggle my little angle baby for the first time. I didn't care what I looked like, what he looked like, who was there, and who was watching! It was so great to be with him nothing else matter.

When he got taken back to the nursery I visited with my family. I was motivated to get to my feet and start walking around not only to start my own recovery but to be able to love on my baby boy some more! At first it was all I could do to get to my feet, walk out the door and sit down in the wheel chair that was following me but I made it to see my little man. By the middle of the night I was able to get out of bed, steady myself on my IV drip, walk to the nursery, enjoy some time with Xander and get back to my room all by myself! As far as getting myself ready to go back to sleep I struggled. When I called the nurse to help me a little bit she did not seem very happy to help out. All I needed help with was plugging in the IV machine moving my catheter back to my bed and strap my feet into the pressure machines. You would think that I just asked her to cook me a 4 course meal the way she responded to me asking for some help! Oh well she was only my nurse for one night.

Throughout my 4 day recovery at the hospital, Xander seemed to have ups and downs. He ended up staying 5 days longer then I did. Making him there a total of 9 days. From beginning to end he was on all kinds of machines and needed all kinds of help.
He started with a C-PAP.
Had an IV with sugar water in it.
Then to get off the IV he got a NG-tube.
During the move from the IV to the NG-tube he was put under Bilirubin lights.
Because he was in the level 2 nursery he had to be hooked up to their monitors the whole time to watch his heart rate, O2 levels, and respiratory rate.
Then in order to leave the hospital he had to go home on 1/16th of a liter of O2 and on a monitor to let us know where his levels were at while at home.

He left the hospital on July 2nd back at his birth weight of 9lbs 4oz. They said the goal is to be back at the birth weight by their 2 week birthday and he made it by day 9. We went to the pediatrician for his week 2 check up 9 days after he got out of the hospital and he was 10lbs 6oz. Meaning since he got home he had been gaining on average 2oz a day. (normal is 1oz a day). He got off his oxygen and all his monitoring on Thursday July 19 and we couldn't be happier to now have a wireless son!

Day 9- A picture of the person who has gotten you through the most

There is a lot in my life that I have been through, and there has been many people along the way that have been there to help me. Many of them are no longer a part of my life, but a lot of them still are. I would have to say there isn't just one person that has gotten me through everything but I would have to say there are 2 people that come to mind that have been there the most for me throughout the years. One having been there since the day I was born would be my dear sweet mother.
The other having known him for not as long but through a lot would be my dear sweet husband, Preston.

Surprise

I hope everyone who follows my blog already knows that I am pregnant, but I have pictures I want to share and I'm not yet posting to facebook until I know the gender so this is where I will start my excitement! I  am currently 17 weeks pregnant and find out the gender in 12 days I am so excited!

This is where my store begins! After working with my diabetic dr. for a few months I decided it was time to take out my IUD. I set up the appointment for October 7th 2011. The next Monday I started my period. I didn't think too much about it. Preston and I went to the store bought some pregnancy test and waited. Four weeks after I started my period I took a test. (to give you a hint as to what it said it is not the one that is showing to the left) It was negative. I thought no big deal it was the first month trying not too many people get it first try, time to wait for the period to start again so we can try again. Well that is where the problem started... I didn't start, and didn't start, and didn't start. A week went by and I thought maybe the birth control did something to my body and I now have long time between periods. Well the next Sunday Preston said "Lex, your body isn't acting normal, take another test just to make sure." I had also been talking a lot with Michelle Johnson about me getting pregnant (it was while I was in Oklahoma visiting her that I got the impression now was the time to get pregnant) After being a week late on my period I called her up for advise. (I do that a lot cause it wasn't too long ago that she had her first baby) She was with Preston and was begging me to take a test right then and there. I told her I would do it later and would tell her the results. Late that night I took my second test and yup that is where the picture comes from I was pregnant! I sent a message to Michelle and she expressed her excitement the next morning when she woke up.
I love hearing the way people found out about pregnancies and their response so I will share those.
Dad: I owed my dad some money so I asked if I could come by and drop it off to him after work he said yes and I was there when he got home.
After talking for a little bit I said "Dad, guess what!?"
He replies "what?"
I told him "no you have to really guess on this one."
He looks at me and says "your pregnant."
I smiled "hey, your right! You're a pretty good guesser!"
He got a big smile on his face and gave me a big hug
Tammy: I stayed at my dad's house for a little while after I told him. He said he had to go to the store for dinner stuff before Tammy got home. I told him I would ride with him. When we got back Tammy was in kitchen putting all of her stuff away from work.
My dad walks in and says "I'm finally going to be a grandpa!" (Tammy has 3 grandsons and depending on the day my dad either likes playing with them or doesn't want anything to do with them)
Tammy looks at me and looks and my dad and back at me and doesn't say anything with a really confused look on her face. To break the silence and confusion I threw my hands up in the air and said "Surprise!" She started jumping up and down as she moved towards me. She threw her arms around me and squealed out of excitement!
Mom: My mom had been asking me for weeks what I wanted from her and Scotty for Christmas. I kept telling her I don't know and that I will get back to her about it. I called her up and asked if I could come visit her and Scotty, she said yes and Preston and I headed over. When I got there she was in her bedroom.
When I found her I told her, "I finally decided what I want for Christmas!"
She looked at me and said, "ok, what?"
I got a big smile on my face and I told her, "I want a crib!"
She stopped what she was doing, dropped her arms (and her jaw) and said, "you're pregnant?"
"Yes."
"You're pregnant!?"
"Yes."
She had to of asked about 5 times and every time she did she took a small shuffle backwards and a little louder. My smile just kept growing until she finally believed me and stopped asking. She gave me a big hug and asked if I really wanted her to buy the crib. I told her absolutely and that I would start looking and tell her the one I like best. Her eyes started to tear up a little bit as she expressed her excitement that she got to buy the crib.

Sure enough for Christmas I got a crib, mattress and changing table and before I went to bed that night they were all set up.
Scotty: When Preston and I went to visit Mom and Scotty I went and talked to Mom and Preston went to talk to Scotty. After I was done talking to Mom and had her in tears I walked over to see Scotty and he said "congrats kiddo" and gave me a hug. Not sure what him and Preston said but he got the message!
Jesica: I went over to her house for something, I don't really remember what for anymore. She had a new puppy that I hadn't seen before. When I first saw the puppy she was really shy and Jes said, "She takes a min to warm up to new people you will be ok in a few seconds."
So I asked her "what about 2 new people?"
She looked around the corner and asked "Did you bring someone with you?"
"No."
She looked a little confused then looked at my belly and asked "are you pregnant?"
I smiled and told her yes. I was a little scared to tell her at first because the month before she had lost a baby of her own. She was really happy for me though and only once we got talking about her baby did she start to cry and I felt bad. She has been really supportive and sweet.
Mom Millett: We went up to the house and told her when no one was around and she said she would try to keep the secret but made no promises.
Dad Millett: Preston told him at work, he seemed pretty happy about it.
Haley Ostler: Haley told me a few weeks before that she was pregnant. I told her I was going to be writing Ronda soon and asked if she wanted me to tell her or not. She said that she wanted to tell her and not to say anything. Well after I found out I was pregnant I texted Haley and asked "have you written Ronda yet?" She told me not yet and asked why. I told her that I wanted to write Ronda and tell her that I was about 4 weeks behind Haley but I didn't want to ruin her surprise if she hadn't told her yet.
Melanie Jenkins: When she found out she was pregnant she told me that she had a parasite in her uterus. Well when I told her I asked her if that parasite she had was contagious because I think I caught it. She laughed and said it might be.
Then just about everyone else found out from our "announcement" on Thanksgiving or word of mouth.
It has been a really good experience. Another one of my favorite stories was I went to my diabetic dr and he was not very nice and not very supportive at all about the news so I went looking for a new one. I found a new dr the end of December and called to make an appointment. They told me the next opening they have is the end of February. I asked if it was possible to see her before that cause I am pregnant. (I found out with pregnant diabetics they like to see you every month through the entire pregnancy) The receptionist said let me check with the Dr. is it ok if I call you back in a few minutes. I said that was fine. Within 5 minutes they called back and said how about next Wednesday? I giggled a little bit inside to see the urgency after all and said that it would be perfect.
